FYI:

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/25/us/equif ... index.html

You click the link to see if your information was stolen in the breach, and then click "claim" if it was, and enter one page of basic information and request to be paid $125. Equifax will send you a check or prepaid credit card for $125.

It's their penalty for the data breach they had awhile back (story above explains it all).

Or you can choose free credit monitoring for 3/10 years if you prefer.

I think they had 100 million people's info hacked :(

So that's like 1/3 of the US, about 45% of adults.

I read a really awesome article (CNN I think) where a guy is recommending that we post all SSN publicly in 5 years, which would give banks etc 5 yrs to come up with an alternative, and would render the stolen SSNs useless.

I thought it sounded crazy at first, but it makes all the sense in the world to me now.

So, funny thing.

147 million people affect. Let's say they all do $125, because let's be honest, cold hard cash vs nebulous credit watch offer.
Total comes to $18,375,000,000. Total settlement is $380,500,000.

Who sees the math problem?

Bets this damn thing was written by a lawyer?

actually its the Feds that handled this that screwed up the math. They are now saying they didnt anticipate so many folks signing up for the $125 (DUH).

There's actually only $31 mill set aside for the $125 payment, so if 100 million people select it, then everyone only gets $31 instead of $125.

Big mess by incompetent federal officials.

They say now to take the free monitoring, but I still want the cash because we already have a better monitoring service than the 3 credit agencies.
