eBay has banned the sale of virtual items

Postby Rex » Sun Jan 28, 2007 12:15 pm

I heard a rumor that eBay was planning to ban the sale of virtual items from games such as gold, accounts, items, etc. I decided to inquire with eBay customer support and here was my response.

Dear Darrell,

Thank you for writing eBay, we appreciate you taking the time to
investigate eBay policy and how it may affect the sale of your item.

eBay policy doesn't allow the sale of online virtual gaming items,
including game accounts, game characters, game currency, game points or
other similar game items. Although you may have sold similar items in
the past, future listings of such items will not be permitted.

As always, our goal is to keep the eBay marketplace a safe place to buy
and sell. Please understand that violations of eBay policy may result in
a range of actions, including listing cancellation, limits on account
privileges, account suspension, forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled
listings, and loss of PowerSeller status.

I encourage you to read the information available in our Help Topics
about why we restrict certain items from the eBay site. Please visit:

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Max P.

all this could have been bypassed if UO would adopt a ingame auction center, like WOW and FFVI has.

well an ingame auction wouldn't fix it anyway. It's because there are people who would rather pay for the ability to have fun with good gear besides having to do the gold farming.

Actually ... I don't think this will stop much of the selling. People will just get more creative.

ie. "Selling UO Tutorial ... 2 pages of amazing game information .... buy it here for $22.95 .... oh ... and it comes with a free bonus of 10 mil UO Gold."

That's how I've seen it done with Wow. I don't think UO will be much different.

I personally was pleased with the decision to stop the sell of virtual items on Ebay. I think way too many people rely on Ebay and other sites for their in game gold, resources, and items. It took alot away from the UO I remember. Hopefully things will change for the better. I can only hope that UO could return to a time when Players relied upon in-game trade and earning your gold the ol' fashion way... by home vendors or just plain whacking things to death! Uo was once a true community, and I miss it!
Doesn't anybody remember the days when Blacksmith's used to stand by the Brit forge and wait to repair items for gold? Or searching all over the world an back for a Tinker capable of crafting you that special Golem? Before the days of Luna, when having a Mil Gold meant "high status", and now it just means you're broke.
Oh well, I guess I'm finally just getting old, haha
Thanks for letting me rant...
