A tale of the sea

It was a quiet evening on the open ocean. Kaeles had just completed a very long day of crabbing for Landra. He had to get the crabs to Skara Brae before the little critters dried up, but he was taking a break from the work and just enjoying the open ocean. No other ships in sight and miles from land.

He relaxed enough to shift into his true form, a luxury he rarely allowed himself, and never where anyone would find him. He enjoyed a meal, raw fish tasted so much better as a Kitsune than as a human, and some fresh water. Curled up on the deck, letting the ship drift slowly, staring up at the twin moons.

Then, something wasn't right. His sensitive fox like ears heard waves breaking on a shore. “I should be miles from land”, he thought. Another thought had him back in human form and reaching for his telescope.

That was when he saw it. An island where none should be. Checking his maps and a quick sextant reading to verify he hadn't drifted too far, he found that there was no land here. But how could that be, Britannia was well charted.

Then he remembered hearing tales of an island that moved about in the oceans. “Interesting”, thought Kaeles. Before he could think of anything else he saw movement around the island. It looked like a fleet of ships.

Keeping quiet and thanking his lucky stars that there were no lanterns on deck to betray his location thanks to a bit of magic he had learned, he sailed in closer keeping the island's bulk between his ship and the fleet.

As the Revenge came in closer, Kaeles kept watch. And soon his vigilance paid off. In the lead of the fleet making landfall as he watched, was the Starfire Escort. “Ancy will want to know of this” Kaelis mumbled to himself.

As quickly as a stealthy departure allowed, Kaeles set sail for Skara Brae. He would have to drop his load and find Ancy. Now what was the name of that tavern they had met at a few weeks ago? I'm sure a message left there would find him the fastest.

Ancyous leaned over the port rail raising a lantern to the mist and the unknown darkness beyond. He could not see the surface of the water overside. Fore and aft the rail seemed to vanish in the fog. Silence was as absolute as the surrounding gloom.

"¿Dónde estás, Rivero?" he scowled.

Kaeles' message had made reference to an island that drifted about in the seas yet despite his best efforts he'd happened upon nothing but charted atolls and established cays. Certainly there'd been no sign of The Escort and the bastard who steered her. Perhaps this isla could only be seen by the living.

"Jami," he called over his shoulder to his quartermaster at the ship's helm. "Set sail for Skara. Keep watch for The Revenge along the way. If you see her before we make port, raise colors and approach. I wish a word with her captain."

Kaeles sat quietly on the steps of the home he had been sent to. He had been denied entry, and judging by the guards looks, he had no intention of chalenging them. Besides, he was here to get help from the owner of the house, and killing his guards to speed things up seemed . . . . wrong.

It wasn't very long until the owner himself came down the steps. His jet black wings blended into the quiet night as he moved down to meet Kaeles. The warrior in white bowed polietly and offered the pouch he had been told to bring. It was a small fortune in gems, the only payment the owner was said to deal in.

A black hand tucked the pouch away without bothering to look inside and motioned Kaelis to follow. They moved into the home and a few coridors later came to a small comfortable sitting area, not at all what Kaeles had expected.

"So, you have questions young warrior. Let me ask you this first, are they questions I will find interesting?"

"I don't know. It is certainly one I find interesting, you may, what do you consider interesting?"

"Survival is often interesting, is it not?" the black gargoyle asked, the first hint of malice in his voice.

"Survival is very interesting, yes sir." replied Kaelis, wishing his bow were at hand, instead of back on the Revenge.

"But only if it your survival, otherwise it is not so interesting. So tell me, young warrior, who will find your questions interesting?"

"I honestly don't know. I was told you deal in all forms of magic and would be the best person to ask." Kaelis decided to get it all out in the open fast, before the mage changed his mind. "I recently came across an island that was where no island had business being. Then, when a friend went looking for it, the island was gone. I seek the awnser to that riddle. I know only of a few pirates who may find the awnser interesting."

When Kealis blurted out his question, the gargoyle went still. So still Kaelis wasn't sure he was still breathing. Then, he moved so fast Kaelis had no chance to defend himself. One second he was sitting, the next he was pinned to the wall, a hand about his throat. "What do you want with that island, boy? A deal with the owner perhaps, to pay him homage?"

"I don't know who the owner is, I came across it by chance."

Some time past as the wizard held Kaelis there. He was just about to try and shift forms when his host put him down gently. "I sense you speak the truth, and I apologize for my reaction. It is only that Corgul and I have crossed paths many times, and though he has not killed me, I am unable to slay the abomination myself. If you wish him ill, I shall help you find the island again. Take this book and read it well. Study it and let it guide you. And warrior, should you need further aid in this quest, know that Nightfall will aid you."

Kaelis thanked the gargoyle and headed out into the night. After such an encounter, he found comfort in shifting to his true form and running for the Revenge. "I hope this was worth it" was his last thought before he let the run take him.
