A quick update on Bob's (Maldar) status

Talk about anything that's clean.

I bet it was tough (though to what degree I'm sure I have no idea.) I hope nothing I wrote made it sound like this was easy for you. You've made it look commendably easy, but I know behind the scenes there had to have been many struggles. Again, I'm impressed.

Definitely wishing you luck there man!

What type of recovery time do you have from the graft? Will you be gone for a bit?

They are still trying to repair what is left of my arm. Since it is my left arm, or what remains of it, it won't affect my being able to play (other than hitting macros while having to mouse....which is the case already anyway), it will be just a matter of handling any pain to sit here and do it. The OxyContin does surprisingly little for the pain. Since I've been prescribed it for over a year now, my body has built up a tolerance to it. I certainly know when I have forgotten to take it, though. They have quite a bit left to do in order to fit me with an artificial arm since they are going to "install" (for lack of a better word) a state-of-the-art limb.
What will take me out of action will be if they decide to re-break my tibia and fibula..................which I am certainly voting against. Apparently, the pins didn't do what the surgeons wanted. It was a double compound fracture and a lot of damage was done to the bones, flesh, ligaments, tendons, and the artery. Surgeons aren't happy with how things have progressed with its healing. They also want to take some of my thigh muscle and fashion it into a new ACL. If they do that, I will be bedridden for a minimum of 6 months. If that happens, I don't know if I could handle it. I was losing it being bedridden for 10 months.
My left eye orbit still hurts like hell and I want them to see what they can do with that, but it takes a back seat to these other things.

You can bet your a** it is a good thing the three arsonists are still in jail awaiting trial. I'm not so certain I could keep my senses. The men that were killed were very good, long-time friends of mine (one of which went through the fire academy with Chris and myself over 35 years ago) and the three pieces of sh*t that set that fire are just a waste of skin. Our meeting could be short and unfriendly.

Sorry...........even after a year, I still haven't allowed myself to vent yet. This is the closest I've come.

Thanks for your post, Maldar. You have been incredibly kind and civil in all your posts. I cannot even imagine the losses you have endured--the death of friends and all the injuries you have sustained.

I just thank God that you made it, and your spirit seems greatly healed. I know nothing can ever replace the friends you have lost, or the time to heal, but I know every day is precious, and I'm so glad you are here with us and your family. You are a survivor!

Bob I hope i never know the pain you have endured...physically mentally and emotionally but I have faith in you that you can and will overcome all that has happened and that each step forward is a step that we are there to help you with in any way shape or form. Venting is the best way sometimes to let something out without allowing it to shape your decisions and any time you need to vent we are here for you. I am thankful that you have friends like Chris who are able to be there for you IRL but i am also thankful that you have chosen us to be your friends also.

Best of luck on this step today with the skin graft and remember you can always ask for a cuter nurse we will not hold that against you.

Wow Maldar, I remember when this all happened a few years back, but i guess either i left on my yearly trip or somehow missed some of the details of the story the first time.

My heart is with you buddy. No need to apologize for the strong emotions about the guys who did that. I just keep telling myself that people reap what the sow.

Very, very well said, Ciara. My sentiments exactly.

Maldar, my prayers continue to be with you. And I have worked in the state prison system for about 12 years now and deal on a daily basis with people like those arsonists. We are supposed to be professional and treat everybody fairly no matter what they have done, etc., and even though nothing they have done has effected me personally, this is still very hard to do at times. Blowing off steam is not only ok but quite needed, especially in your situation I would say. And one time when I was having one of those days and was blowing off some steam to my supervisor, she said something that I found strangely comforting. She said, "You know, Garrett, some people are alive simply because it's illegal to kill them." I have remembered that statement often in the years since. :)

Pain aside, I am home and bored, so I thought I would do some in-game fishing tonight until it hurts too much to continue. I slept for hours after I got home this evening (I couldn't go to sleep last night) and am wide awake and stoned on my butt from new pain meds to augment the OxyContin.
The graft went okay.......I just have to keep it immobile (piece of cake.........sheesh) and moist. The surgeon told me that he couldn't shave skin from any more places on my body, as they have all been used by past grafting. That was bittersweet since the places that have had the skin shaved in the past have always hurt FAR worse than the area grafted. The problem with this time, though, was they used skin from an organ donor. First off, the chances that my body will reject it are exponentially higher than using my own skin would have been. Second, I find the whole "skin from a corpse" thing pretty freaking creepy!
Hopefully, they will finally get my "little buddy" (aka: my arm stub) ready to reinstall my prosthetic arm. They had it on for a while a few months ago but it just hurt far too much and even did some damage to what had already been repaired. (My luck lately.)
They seem to think I will need additional grafts but that yet stands to be seen. We didn't discuss my leg. That will be a whole new set of surgeons (neuro, vascular, etc.)
I tell you...........it's always something. :)

Thank you all for your posts and concerns. I appreciate it.

Special note to CIGNA: Your insurance sucks and your policy mandating how many days of hospitalization any given procedure will be covered is just plain insensitive and stupid!

Maldar - Insurance companies dont exist to help people, they exist to make money ... the best way to do that, is to do that is to screw the most people possible while still staying in business. I'll end this rant before it really gets started, but suffice to say: insurance companies suck.
