Halloween Quest 2011

Postby Warden » Thu Oct 20, 2011 7:54 pm

Don’t do this quest until at least the evening of October 21, 2011, unless you just want to practice. The items you get are timed and last about 8 days, but the quest finale (live EM event) where you need said items is not until October 28.

A TIP: nothing that you get on this quest is blessed, so insure everything immediately--maps, items, etc. Especially insure those teleporting maps!

The quest starts with a talking book on the ground near the Zento moongate (Tokuno --> Makoto-Jima on the gump.) This guide will walk through the whole quest, but it’s also possible to skip it all and just go to the two final locations to get the items.

Double-click the book on the ground to teleport to a strange dungeon area. Ignore the screaming NPC and go talk to the Entrapped Spirit. Say “hi” to start him talking (a convention used throughout these quests.) Pick out key words from what he says and repeat them back to him to prompt his next line of dialog. Spawn: liches, skeletal dragons, rotting corpses, lesser undead.

Go through the portal and find yourself in Trinsic. Say “hi” to the Old Sage and use key words as usual. Do as the Sage says and go find the ruins North of Trinsic.

At the ruins, double-click the map on the ground to receive a random map in your bag. Keep doing so you have at least one called “The City of Britain (Felucca)” and another called “Find Michael in a tavern near Mistas”. The third, called “Find the Noble in the maze”, can be discarded; this is the one that will “simply waste your time” as stated by the Old Sage. (If you decide to do anyway, you will find the noble near a building on the West end of the Hedge Maze. He will have you bring him about 20 different food and cooking items, and then all he says is “Don’t do that quest!”) Spawn at the Ruins: none.

You can start with either map; in this case, we’ll go with Britain. Double-click it to instantly teleport to Felucca Britain, and read the book on the ground. It will advise you to seek a White Wyrm hunter who will be found near his prey in Felucca (Ice Dungeon.) Go there and speak to the hunter, Eard, who will ask you to retrieve his bow; you will find it in the Ice Fiend room (same dungeon). Backtrack and return his bow, and he will tell you to go find Oliver at Buc’s Den in Felucca. Spawn in Ice Dungeon: ice elementals, snow elementals, white wyrm, ice fiends, ratmen, lesser frost creatures. CAUTION: Many of these do a cold area of effect damage that will reveal you if hidden. It's really pretty nasty in there.
Image

Oliver is in the tavern just West of the Buc’s Den moongate. He’ll need lots of bribery so bring some gold (69, to be exact) to buy food and drink from the waiter and cook. Everything he needs can be gotten from one of them. A TIP: he will not accept the bread that costs 5 gold, only the one that costs 6 gold. He will eventually tell you to find a “gent” at Empath Abbey in Felucca.
Image

This is another Old Sage and can be found upstairs on the West side just after you enter Empath Abbey. Do NOT take the Yew moongate to get here--it's one of the busiest PvP spots in the game. Spawn: Waka/Cop :D
Image

The Sage will ask you to retrieve a mushroom from along the road to Terathon Keep. He does not specify a facet, but they are found only in Felucca. Going to Moonglow and through the Recsu Recdu teleporter is the fastest route. Spawn: very little until you get to the mushroom, at which point there may be nothing or any and every kind of ophidian.

Bring back the mushroom (use your map to teleport out!) and the Sage will ask a question, the answer to which is “Despise”. Dungeon Despise in Felucca is where you are to go next.

Important note: these are the final items from this branch of the quest, and you need TWO of them from the Pulsating Mass. But the Mass will only give up one per character, so bring a friend or go back later on a different character. (You do not have to run through the whole quest with the second character.) Also, the item it gives is random so you may just end up with two of the same thing. After a day (maybe less) the same character can go back and try for another item, too.

The Pulsating Mass is on the third level of Despise back where the Cyclops spawn. Use your map to teleport out! Spawn: etins, trolls, ogres, ogre lords, cyclopian warriors, titans. CAUTION: Third level Despise is another big PvP area. The route shown does not take you into the champ spawn area, but be on the lookout and have your teleporting map ready.
Image

The other leg of the quest starts with Michael who is no longer near Mistas. If you go to where he was in Mistas, there is a book directing you to a different spot. The map will just teleport you to the Trinsic moongate, so take that to the Spirituality moongate in Ilsh. Go North to the Twin Oaks Tavern on the East end of the lake. Michael will ask you a question; the answer is “Bob”. Spawn: pixies, wisps, unicorns, etc. Low-karma characters beware!
Image

Michael will then send you to get some strange colored wire from a workshop in a dungeon. This is in the second level of the Sorcerer’s Dungeon. Take the Valor moongate, go Southwest until you cross the bridge, then South. (It’s labeled as Terort Skitas on the map shown here, but that’s actually the city above the Sorcerer’s Dungeon.) The spawn inside is nasty in places and it's very useful to be able to invis or hide. See the map for the location of the wire, which only has dull copper elementals around it, but you may drag other stuff with you. Using your map to teleport out will not reveal you if hidden or invisible. Spawn: liches, lich lords, lesser undead, blood elementals, acid elementals, lesser elementals, hell hounds.

Give Michael the wire and he will send you after something more challenging: a dragon’s egg. This is found in the Dragon’s Lair in Ilshenar. Take the Honor moongate and follow the route shown. Your character must be able to teleport to get into the Lair, first across the lava river, then from rock to rock on top to get to the actual entrance. See the screenshots for details. Spawn outside: imps, earth elementals, lava lizards. Spawn inside: one Ancient Wyrm (possibly a paragon), lava lizards, fire elementals.

Take the egg to Michael and he will send you after the final items. The same warnings given above apply to this; the Strange Brew you find will only give you one of the two items needed. The Strange Brew is found in the Pass of Karnaugh—take the Compassion moongate, go North and then West. On the second floor of the large building, about in the middle, is the winery where you will find the Strange Brew. Spawn: liches, dread spiders, poison elementals, lesser undead.
Image

Once you have gotten both items from both branches of the quest (four items total), you hang on to them until the live EM event on Friday, October 28, at 6:00 PM Pacific time. Here is what they look like:

And lastly, here is a screenshot just for Chalnoth. It's of the map from the enhanced client where the UO developers have clearly labeled the new High Seas "floating dock" area as the Sea Market. So quit trying to insist it's only called the Floating Emporium! :P

Just read this post from EM Sangria over on Stratics. It was in response to a question about if we would all need all four items from this quest.

Only the four items *total* are needed to free the spirit. So if you have one item, and Bob the Builder has the second, and Papa Smurf has the last two, everyone will be good.

So I guess this is good in that we shouldn't have anybody get cheated because one of their items expired 5 minutes too soon, or whatever. But it also makes the quest pointless except for the curious, as it seems everybody at the EM event will be "winners" as long as SOMEBODY has the needed items. I think it's great when everybody can participate even if they didn't do the pre-quests, but I think those who did do the pre-quests should be able to get something more...

This is a great walk through Avo. Can't say I am too sorry we don't have to get evertyone through it. It was tough enough run with Dean for the two items we each got. We will still need to make sure that we have all 4 pieces prior to the EM Event.

Yeah, there are a couple places on the quest that would be total chaos with a group--like Ice Dungeon. If we tried to make a guild activity of it, I think we would have to go in groups of two or three tops to those places. Anyway, like I said at the beginning, anybody can run to the two final locations and get the items, whether they go through the whole quest or not, so making sure we have a full set for the final event shouldn't be hard.
