I love Garriott for creating Ultima and UO, but I just don't see the mass appeal of this. He was quoted as saying this was the future of gaming, but as far as I can tell, there's no real gaming in this. It's truly like a poor man's sims, and it's like UO if you take out everything except decorating houses.
I know some folks will like this, but none of the friends I have that are gamers would even consider playing this new "game".

Yeah, as a new game, who knows. The only upside I see is that you collect digital versions of real-world items, and supposedly the information about said items is true, along with links to external sites where you can learn even more.
But as for the new UO game, this Ultima Collector system provides the technology for friends lists, secure trading, storage, etc., but "UO2" will also have combat and the other traditional role playing elements. Garriott says they are rolling out the technology one layer at a time and testing it out in other games like this Ultima Collector.
