Ah... the good ole days!

I thought it might be fun to get a post of favorite recollections of UO days gone by going. What are some of your favorite UO memories from back what?

A few of mine:
1) The Moonglow bank roof being where all the elite mages gathered... I remember being a thief in Moonglow (LoL's origional profession ... member of OCH and terrorizing MG... and ironically, Myst's profession, a member of ARM and trying to save MG), and just KNOWING if I could get someone to gate me to the roof I could make a living stealing from all those darn uppity mages! Snooping was actually important!

2) PvP being fun (to me): Way back when I actually enjoyed Pvp ... mainly because worst case scenario I would lose a power or *gasp* vanq bow that I would just have to go hunting for a day to replace, and a bit of leather armor. Now so many of the items are hard to find or costly, I don't want to risk losing them.

So many more, but I'd rather hear about other people's stories and see if they spark any lost memories of my own!

I always enjoy remembering the moments that made my heart race and my hands shake for the next half hour...

- I remember spending over a week straight doing nothin but killing cows in Delucia and saving the leather to sell when I first started. I worked so hard, and saved up a really good amount. I finally found a buyer, and sold them all the leather I had for about 800k. My hands were shaking so bad I almost couldn't click the trade window button to accept the gold. Man I felt rich!!!

- I remember the very first time I killed a red. His name was Suicide Gnome. What a rush!

- I remember someone attacking me while i was hunting lizzard men in Despise i think, and I started running for my life... after a few seconds i realized i wasn't taking all that much damage, so i decided to fight... in a few more seconds I had the guy who attacked me on the run. I ended up chasing him all the way down past brit to his keep. He opened the door and ran in, but it was set to public so i ran in after him and killed him in his own house!

- I remember finding a Singing Ball at an IDOC, and then being so excited because I found someone who traded me a Voice of the Fallen King for my Singing Ball. It was my first artifact ever! I was SO happy!

- I remember 15 minutes after I made that trade I found out that the gorget was worth about 500k, and the singing ball I traded was worth between 30-50 mil at the time. Funny how fast your perspective can change.

I remember getting a party of 5 or 6 friends to go down and hunt Ogre Lords and we were worried that we may not have enough people...lol

I remember feeling so rich when I was finally able to buy my first set of GM plate mail for my swordsman...

I remember running out the east gate of delucia and heading north to act as bait for the pkers would chase me and allow my friends to run to the east so we could go hunt gazers...lol

yep things have changed, but dont forget, u can insure items now, so all it costs you is 600 gold max for each item for each death. Way better than trying to replace a vanquishing sword :)

LoL, Endrik, I also remember farming leather that way. Wow ... I went with a friend and he tamed the bulls working Taming skill and then I worked provoke and collected the leather. Wow. =)

IDOC hunting was a huge passion of mine. I've lost (due to 2 of my own houses going IDOC) and gained (due to hunting IDOCs) quite a few fortunes in rares over the years ... unfortunately I'm currently in the "Lost" stage right now ... and IDOCs seem to be pretty rare now. :(

Damien, the Ogre Lords were indeed once a huge menace! Those and Liches used to be the major things that my friends and I used to gather groups to hunt. I remember the Moonglow Cemetary used to spawn just one Lich at a time and it was intimidating if it popped while you were already fighting a spectre or shade! =)

I remember my first day (Aug 1997) and getting killed by 3 chickens just over the Vesper bridge (they would aggro) ... then getting attacked by a grizzly (they were reds then). They were way mean then.

I remember when they FINALLY introduced bank boxes.

I remember when OSI proposed "property taxes" on home owners as the first gold sink in the game. It was never put in of course.

I remember when they made when I healed with bandies, they were bloodied and left in your pack... ewww.

I remember power hour.

Sheesh what a sad list of mine lol.

Let's see.

I remember "server wars" for the last 20 minutes before the server restart on Vesper road. Where you could go all out and PvP in your best of the best gear, because it would reset to the point 20 minutes before server restart.

I remember gating dragons, and having dragons gated on me, in the Bone Mage room in Deceit.

I remember forming a wall in the Bone Knight room for getting those last points in my melee skill.

I remember the Lich Lord room as the prime spot to be PK'd and to PK for nice loots. I remember often recalling out when good plate or swords dropped.

I remember doing Champs every night in a row for 2 weeks after AoS cames out, and amassing my first real fortune in the game. Our group had so many +25 stat scrolls, we had to hold onto them so as not to flood the market, lol.

I remember all kinds of good stuff. There has never been a game like this, that even comes close to it.

lets see ...

I remember:

when we couldnt recall, and had to run everywhere (that was interesting).

when you could drop a bag of purple pots at brit bank and kill lots of people (not that I did it, but I witnessed it from the roof several times).

when beta started, and we ran around town trying to get about 6 more people to come with us to kill that dang ettin outside of town (and it took all of us to drop it rofl).

when the game started we couldnt heal, other than walking around and passively healing, so I would fight an ettin or ogre for 20 min, then walk around to get health, then slap him again for 20 minutes, all the while hoping a red didnt come find me and kill me and take that 40 gold from me hehe.

running to dungeon wrong, getting loaded with gold, then having to decide to take the "short cut" across the bridge through the Oasis desert and the east Brit swamp to get to the bank in Brit, or top run around the world and come in through the mountain pass west of Brit. Either way we almost always got jumped by hidden pks that would jump out and loot us of everything. Sheesh.

talking to a guy near hq1 that was chopping wood like 24 hrs a day for a week out there. I struck up a conversation and asked him if he made good money selling the wood. He said someone told him if he kept chopping wood for several days, he could clear more space to put a bigger house DOH! He was very pissed when I confirmed that didnt work.

The first time I met Thrax ingame (he was Val Venus of the Holy Roman Empire then). He told me he had gm friends that would trap players under his house, and he would force them to chop wood and mine ore for him before he would let them out. I was like wtf is this guy drinking? So I asked the logical question ... ok if you made them chop wood to get out, didnt you have to let them out to chop the wood first? He waited a minute, called me an asshole, and ran off.

The second time I ran into thrax, a friend of mine who was a guard for the town of Oasis icqd me and said there was a retarded player telling him that HRE and PAS were going to invade and take over Oasis. the guard laughed and told him to piss off, and that he would be sorry, because his guild had over 200 towers ingame, and he would bring them all back to kill him and the rest of the guards. When we checked uo.com, HRE had a whopping total of two players, ROFL. So I showed up and found him and told him if he ever told anyone that PAS was friends with him, I would take our three weakest players and kill him a thousand times ingame. He called me a name again and ran off. Funny thing is he actually did "invade" oasis with his ENTIRE guild (all two of them) the next day, and the guard friend of mine dropped them both in like 5 seconds, and icqd me laughing his butt off about it.

I remember the bachelor auction at the YMCA, and volunteering to be a part of it (sheesh). I was standing in the Y with the other guys as they prepped for the auction, where we had to go tell the girls what skills we had so they knew who to bid on to get one hours worth of mining, smithing, etc. Most of us realized we had no real skills and a few started to panic. "What if no one bids on me?" hehe etc. Anyways, a female char named Bugs Bunny stormed into the room, and walked up to a guy and said SHOW ME YOUR TEETH and pretended to check out his teeth. She then left and the guy said WHOLLY CRAP SHE SCARED THE HELL OUTTA ME.

Well the auction started, and most people were auctioned off for about 5k gold, a decent amount at that time. Then it was my turn and I thought WHOLLY CRAP WHAT IF NO ONE BIDS ON ME hehe ... I walk out and before they could call on me to describe my skills, 3 girls start a bidding war on me, and I was sold for like 100k gold. DOH! Anyways the girl who won just wanted to sit ingame for an hour and talk with me, and she was pretty nice. Ended up being a good thing for the Y and was hilarious to be a part of.

I also remember being at an ingame event by gms where PAS and Sonoma Alliance allies were waiting at the hedge maze, guarding a chest from SAS and other reds that were going to try to take it from us. And DeGuy says ingame to me "Oh hey KD I didnt recognize you there with a weapon on" and everyone laughed like crazy rofl. Dang goober. back then I was a tank mage using a bardiche rofl.

I also remember hanging out under the stairs at the training building just west of the bridge west of Brit west bank. Stuff popped into the chests there and I could steal some and sell it (stuff like regular chainmail leggings etc rofl hey it was a living). Well we had to stay hidden so no one called guards on us when we stole, and one time I was there hidden and a guy popped out to steal something, and another guy started yelling gaurds! The thief laughed and typed in "You dumbass you cant even spell guards right" and yep, as soon as that came on screen a guard showed up and killed him. I just laughed my butt off on that one.

Ill post more fun stories later. those were my earliest recollections of fun things that first year of UO.

I have a lot of great memories, but KD just prompted one. I remember many years ago we used to have a crafter night where we would work skills, and I would always ask KD to come and tell us stories of the "early days" of his UO life. That will always be one of my favorite UO-PAS memories. I loved the stories, and didn't mind hearing some of the same ones many times.

Thanks, KD, for sharing your stories with us again!

Sometimes the best times weren't what you were doing but who you were doing it with. I've had the fortune to be part of some really good groups over the years and I'm more looking forward and enjoying the moment with PAS than looking back. But anyway . . .

Hunting Earth Ele's in Shame trying to get enough gold to buy our first in game house. (Back when Mage's had to acutally buy regs, oh the horror of it! ! !)

Doing massive RP/PvP fights in and around some really remote areas of the game.

And sometimes just being on and doing nothing with people because that was the only way to talk before Vent and ICQ were on my computer.

... wait ... you don't need to buy regs anymore? I still do every few days ... hmmm

I've got another one ... how about: Not standing directly next to someone. Back in the day thieves were so common around MG bank that you never EVER let someone stand right next to you. You knew you trusted someone when you didnt mind them being within stealing range. ;)

I also remember when tinkered chests and poisoned food were good ways to PK in town without going grey or getting guard whacked. =)

how about that very short time when they gave the guards lightning attacks but not insta-kill? I saw a guy running through NJ being chased by a guard that never killed him. Was funny as heck.

And how about when mages had overpowered fireballs? So all u ever saw for a week was a machine gun toting fireball throwing mage when u saw a red mage. That was wild. Then they nerfed it.

How about when u had to carry a key to your house to get in? And if u got killed and they looted it u lost all your stuff? Especially if you had a rune and a key on ya, then they could recall to the house and try the key.

We had a fight with a red once, and one of our guys chased him off, and like 10 min later he icqs for as many PAS to get to NJ as possible to loot a red house. So he gates us in and we take everything in this house while this red ghost walks around "oooo oooo ooing". hehe, our guy chase him across the entire continent until the guy ran into his house. But the red was stupid enough to then come out to try to kill our guy, and he died (with his key on him).

ROFL that was funny.

or the time that SAS was looting hq1 (sort of). One of our guys was in hq1 and a naked girl came outside and wanted to talk to him. So he goes out (with the key) and the girl kills him and proceeds to gate in SAS members (our hated enemy). Well here's the funny part. One of our guys is hidden next door and is able to jump into one of their gates as they move stuff to their stash house. He goes there and starts looting even better stuff, marks a rune outside, and recalls back and forth to his house. By the time they cleaned out our house, he had all of their best stuff, which was way better than ours btw.

THAT was funny as hell.

Or the time a friend of mine that played a char named Ali Baba, a thief. He was bored and wanted something to do, so I said "go to the SAS house and mess with them".

So he goes there and runs around naked outside till they come out and chase him around. He finds a key on one of them and steals it, runs up to the house, and locks them out! I'm way off in the woods watching this whole thing, hidden. They were pissed, and called in reinforcements. Well my friend finds their best stuff and recalls away to stash it. then he recalls back, runs around as they chase him, runs to the door, unlocks it, runs in, and locks it again! Takes another load, etc etc.

I think he got 7 or 8 loads of stuff before they finally kill him, but he doesnt have the key on him! He later told me he had stashed the key in his house and wanted them to kill him and not find the key rofl.

Anyways 2-3 days later one of them that had a backup key apparently got them back in the house, but he would pop in every so often to unlock the house and run off, hoping others would find an open door and loot the place (we were never sure if anyone did).

that was funny as heck too.

Griefers being griefed. rofl.

oh yeah the silver serpents ... they were my nemesis when I walked chars from papua to del to train them there. They were as fast or faster than us on horses, so your only chance was to start running before they locked on ... then pray they got stuck on a twig or bird or run up on a hill instead of chasing us on the ground.

Sheesh they sucked hehe.

I remember when Judas (my father) and I were in the same guild how he'd come up behind me and one hit would kill me.

I remember when I went on my first PAS event to play with Blood Elms and I died 100+ times and everyone had to rez me.

I remember running into Thrax for the first time then dying a horrible death.
